Head out into Manosphere

All of us know what it’s like for a woman to negotiate femininity in the ‘manosphere’. I understand the science of fertility and long hair but I had no idea that sporting short hair is simply liberating. I am understanding that I have a more confident, carefree strut regardless of what covers my head. My own perspective has altered a bit but importantly it has become a really good way of weeding out the douchecanoes.

Since I’ve cut my hair, every social conversation begins with a mourning session, dedicated to the fond memory of my losses, –the long tresses and my feminine appeal. The next ten minutes are spent in validating how my partner felt and if our own ‘fifty shades of grey’ were turning to nightmares in the bedroom.

However in reality I may actually be turning many a corners in the bedroom but certainly not turning any heads outside.

Women instinctively know that women with long hair are more attractive to men than the ones with short and it is assumed that ones with short hair are rebellious, masculine and abrasive with a loud mouth. I now have half of the chauvinistic creatures in the manosphere naturally steering away from me. Others who know me, call me brave and audacious only to be told that this is just an act of kindness to my own self. You see the cost of a simple cut and blow dry for a woman is typically around £50 in London and contributes £7bn to UK economy.

My hair has played its part considering it goes crazy twice a week and needs steroids to calm it down my hairdresser over the years has upgraded to a detached home. She has been a friend and someone who understands my head better than anyone else.

When I decided to cut my hair short she and her business have dived straight into depression but my very own head has been floating in the clouds.

The only time I cover my head is when I am face- timing my father, because for him I am still ‘his little girl with two long braids’.Otherwise, this sense of freedom for a woman of doing away with her own vanity, lame opinions and biased judgements is liberating. As long as it is her own choice of expression it could be anything short, long or extra long. There is a world that we are a part of and that we have subconsciously created to please the opposite sex. In order to be free of this captive, we have to change the narrative inside out and sometimes outside in.

USO

USO wears many hats — and occasionally forgets where she puts them. Blogger, once upoan a time a radio broadcaster, few years ago a freelance content writer, and a believer that everything has a theory. She has had her words appear on the pages of The Statesman and The Telegraph in India, and her voice air over All India Radio FM every evening 8pm-9pm where she once hosted a music chat show with more rhythm than any running playlist. Based in London, USO is a senior executive in technology services. She’s wildly passionate about everything from the poetic flutter of drying clothes in the wind to nailing that PowerPoint pitch. Through all of life’s plot twists, two things remain her North Stars: Running and Writing. One fuels her body, the other, her soul. She's currently working on publishing her first book — a patchwork of stories about you, me, and the magical mess in between. Keep an eye on this space — or at least on your bookshelf.
